We have arrived...

KI KATI!
Hello from Kampala, the bustling capital city of Uganda.  As we enter our 6th day it's hard to believe how much we've already done...as they say in Luganda, "sheesh"!  We began our filming on Sunday at Cornerstone home for orphaned boys.  The home, nestled in the Kibuli hill neighborhood, houses around 18 boys and a few mentors.  We took time to play with the boys and get to know a bit more about their backgrounds.  We all decided to focus on one boy in particular, Marvin.  Yesterday Noah and Nicki followed him through his old neighborhood, learning a lot about his past.
Each of us has been able to explore all parts of the production process, trading off between filming, sound recording and editing.  In addition to Cornerstone we have filmed a Ugandan dance rehearsal, various scenes around Kampala, interviews with Dick Kasolo (the Kings Press Secretary) and lots of footage with Leah Bevis and Aylie Baker.  Leah and Aylie are two of the three Middlebury students we plan to follow for the film.  Their project is really beginning to take shape and it has been a joy to experience their progress.  We are thrilled to meet the third member of their project, Vijay, who is to arrive today.
We've explored all the tastes and sights that Kampala has to offer.  We're all looking forward to a rafting trip this Sunday on the river Nile.  Next week we will head out on two scouting trips.  Gordon and Noah will head with Susan and Steve to Rakai and Nicki and Stephanie will head (by plane!) to Gulu.
We've gotten a great start.  Lots of good footage and no sickness!  Our only casualty has been a water balloon wound to a lavalier microphone.  We're safe and healthy.
